British Nationality could be obtained through your birth, or through the birth of any one of your parents or grandparents, in Ghana. This arises because of Britain's relationship with Ghana and its Colonial history.

To determine what form of British Nationality you might have, an analysis of your family's history must be done, and then applying it to the Nationality laws of Ghana that were passed over the years.

STATUS OF GHANA

Prior to Independence on 06.03.1957, Ghana was made of four different territories. From this date up until the present day, Ghana was a independent Commonwealth country.

From 1821 until 31.12.1948, the Gold Coast Colony fell within the Crown's Dominions. Between 01.01.1949 and 05.03.1957, it fell with the UK and Colonies.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
