A New Zealand Passport holder has the right to Permanent Residency in Australia, without the need to obtain any visa or residency permit. A New Zealand Passport holder has free right of entry into Australia, as well as the right to work.

A New Zealand passport holder is issued with a Special Category subclass 444 visa on arrival into Australia.

From the 26th February 2001, a New Zealand Citizen resident in Australia could only sponsor a family member as an "eligible citizen" IF:

- they were in Australia on that date; AND/OR
- lived in Australia for at least 12 months in the preceding 24 months.
