This is a rare instance of a claim to British nationality through marriage. It applies to a woman who meets the following key criteria:

 - Born in Ghana before its independence;

 - Neither parent was born in Ghana; AND

 - Married to a British man before 1983.

Because neither parent was born in Ghana, she did not become Ghanian and became a British Overseas Citizen (or BOC) after independence. Because the Right of Abode passed to the woman through marriage, she became a full British citizen on 1 January 1983.
