United Kingdom - flag United Kingdom - Passport & Nationality - Asians in Sri Lanka (UK Nationality)

Because of how the Constitution of Sri Lanka determined how Citizenship was granted, Sri Lankans with parents or grandparents born OUTSIDE of Sri Lanka have a possibility of being granted one of the five forms of British Nationality. This is because of the protection offered to British Subjects born or resident in Ceylon before Independence.

In particular, and because of the large numbers involved, Sri Lankans with Indian ancestry (parents or grandparents born in India, or what was known as "Undivided India" prior to Independence) have a higher likelihood of being granted automatic British Nationality.

STATUS OF SRI LANKA

Between 1802 and 31.12.1948, Ceylon fell within the Crown’s Dominion as the Colony of Ceylon and then as independent Ceylon.

From 01.01.1949 up until the present day, Sri Lanka was an independent Commonwealth country.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
