United Kingdom - flag United Kingdom - Passport & Nationality - British Overseas Citizen (BOC) - Ghana

This solution arises from an applicant's birth in one of the two British Colonies that made up pre-independence Ghana.

The independence laws of the new country determined who became Ghanian citizens upon independence. If a person did NOT become a Ghanian citizen, then this person would have been reclassified as a British Overseas Citizen (or BOC) on 1 January 1983. Broadly, this solution requires the following:

 - Applicant born in Ashanti or the Gold Coast Colony (the two British Colonies that made up modern-day Ghana);

 - Applicant born before independence on 6 March 1957; AND

 - neither parent nor any grandparent was born in a territory that formed part of modern-day Ghana.

In some circuimstances, it is possible for this claim to lead to full British nationality. In most cases, this requires the Right of Abode through a UK born grandparent.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
