South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands - flag South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands - Passport & Nationality - British Nationality

British Nationality could be obtained through your birth, or through the birth of any one of your parents or grandparents, in South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands. This arises because of Britain's relationship with South Georgia and Britain's Colonial history.

To determine what form of British Nationality you might have, an analysis of your family's history must be done, and then applying it to the Nationality laws governing South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands that have been passed over the years.

STATUS OF SOUTH GEORGIA AND SOUTH SANDWICH ISLANDS

The Falkland Islands include the South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands.

Up to 31.12.1948, these islands were within the Crown's Dominions. Between 01.01.1949 and 02.03.1962, the islands were within the UK and Colonies. From 03.03.1962 until 31.12.1982, they remained with the UK and Colonies, but with South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands  becoming Dependencies. After 01.01.1983 until the present day, the islands are classified as a British Dependent Territory.

Argentina dispute sovereignty over these islands, an issue that precipitated the Falklands War.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
