A Visitor Visa (often referred to as a travel visa or a transit  visa) is usually issued for a short period of time (anything between a day or up to 6 months).

In general, a Tourist visa expressly states that no work or business activity is allowed. It is sometimes issued at Immigration Control, though some countries require "entry clearance" - that is, to obtain the visa BEFORE they travel to the intended destination.
