France - flag France - Passport & Nationality - France Citizenship-Former Territories

Specific provisions exist on rights to French nationality through your parents in regard to overseas territories and foreign countries, in light of the specific colonial history of France.

There is a strong possibility you are French if one of your parents was born in a former overseas territory of France prior to Independence and you were born in France after that date and before January 1, 1994.

The situation may vary for parents of persons who were born in countries such as New Caledonia, the Wallis and Futuna Islands, French Polynesia, Mayotta, Algeria, Madagascar, the Camorra Archipelago, Affars and Issas, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, India, Tunisia, Morocco, Togo and Cameroon (former French territories).

As a general rule, if the parent was never issued official French citizenship papers during his/her lifetime, then there is a good chance that the French nationality petition of the child will fail. For more specific advice, you should speak to a professional.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
