New Zealand - flag New Zealand - Family & Partner - Parent Visa

This Parent Visa is for people who want to live in New Zealand on a permanent basis and have an adult child who is either a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident living in New Zealand. In some situations, grandparents and legal guardians are also considered as parents.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be the parent of an adult child (17 years or older) who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Have the "centre of gravity" of family living in New Zealand
  • Supply evidence of the relationship between the you and your children, whether they live in New Zealand or elsewhere

The sponsor must provide financial support and accommodation to the applicant for a period of up to 24 months if necessary. The sponsor must have lived in New Zealand for a minimum of 3 years to be eligible to act as a sponsor.

If you are the grandparent(s) of a child living in New Zealand and you wish to apply for this visa, you must show evidence of the child’s relationship to you, and evidence that your grandchild’s parents are deceased.

If a child is legally resident in New Zealand, then they are able to bring over their parent(s) to New Zealand. The sponsoring child must have been legally resident and self-sufficient in New Zealand for a period of at least 3 years. The parent(s) must have no other family connections in their current country of residence.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
