In order to qualify for a Passport by Descent, the candidate must me the following requirements:

- A child is born outside Slovenia to a father and mother who are Slovenian citizens.
- A child is born outside Slovenia and one parent is a Slovenian citizen and the other parent does not have citizenship for a country or it is not known.
-A child is born outside Slovenia to a father or mother who are Slovenian citizens.
Procedure to claim it:
• parents must give notification of the birth at the local Embassy and claim the citizenship before the 18th birthday of the child;
• or the child, before the 18th birthday, comes with the parent who is the citizen of the Republic of Slovenia to live in Slovenia permanently.
- A person is between 18 to 36 years of age at the time of filling the application.
Procedure: A person of full legal age may, before turning 36 years of age, may claim citizenship subject to the following two conditions:
• from the time of birth until the filing of the application one of the parents is a Slovenian citizen or, if the parent is deceased before the filing of the application, was a Slovenian citizen until their death, and
• the Slovenian citizenship did not terminate after the age of 18 on the basis of a discharge, waiver or withdrawal.
