United Kingdom - flag United Kingdom - Passport & Nationality - British Citizenship (British Overseas Territory - Birth pre 83)

The status of a British Overseas Territories citizen (BOTC) relates to persons holding British Nationality by virtue of a connection with a British Overseas Territory.

Prior to 21 May 2002, only BOTCs from the Falklands Islands and Gibraltar had automatic access to British citizenship. Those born in a British Overseas Territory before 1 January 1983 were reclassified as British citizens in 2002 if their father was a) born in the UK, b) born in a British Overseas Territory after 1982, or c) ordinarily settled in that British Overseas Territory in which their child was born. This can now be extended to the maternal line, after recent changes changes to remedy gender inequality in the old law.

The other issue that used to create a problem for automatic acquisition of British nationality - illegitimacy and birth of of wedlock - has also been largely removed. Claims can be made where this was the case.

WhatPassport.com is a specialist UK Nationality and British Citizenship site offering an online search and assessment. Claims to hold a British Passport can be complex and the site offers a quick, simple search to give you the answers. While many people qualify for the UK Ancestry Visa based on holding a Commonwealth passport with a UK born grandmother or grandfather, we have found that if you have a grandparent born in the UK, or if your mother is British or your father is British, then there are several scenarios where you can claim British Nationality and the right to hold a British Passport. This stems from Britain’s collection of British Colonies, British Protectorates and British Protected States in the middle of last century and the Nationality rules concerning what are now the countries of the Commonwealth.
